One full-length hooded cloak in rust wool, built to change shape from the same set of side buttons: closed as a double-breasted crossover, folded back on one side for weapon access, opened out as a cape, or rebuttoned at the shoulders to sit as a robe. Rust is the earth tone in the range, the one that settles next to worn leather rather than standing apart from it.

Designed by Chow, made to her specifications since 1994.

Four ways to wear the one cloak

  1. Closed as a double-breasted crossover, the front panels overlap to keep the wind out and leave both hands free.
  2. Buttoned on both sides, so a left- or right-handed wearer can fold back one panel and reach a weapon without opening the whole cloak.
  3. Both panels folded back to wear as a cape, letting the armour or costume underneath show through the drape.
  4. Unbuttoned and rebuttoned at the shoulders, the front panel folds away so the cloak sits as a robe.

Rust sits in the earth range rather than the bright one. It reads as a colour that has been somewhere, so it sits alongside brown leather, undyed linen and kit that has seen a few seasons instead of announcing itself against them. Under grey daylight it holds its warmth where a brighter orange flattens out, and against a white tunic and a dark belt it gives contrast without the costume looking assembled off a shelf. Worn closed it reads warrior or viking; rebuttoned as a robe it carries a mage or a healer just as well.

Why it costs what it does

A fixed cloak hangs one way and is sewn to do one job. This one changes shape from the same set of side buttons, and that is a construction decision rather than a styling suggestion: the buttons run down both sides so weapon access works whichever hand you favour, and the shoulder buttons are what let the front panel fold away into a robe. The wool blend has the weight behind it to fall in proper folds rather than hang flat, and at 49in from the shoulder it reads full-length on most builds without dragging. Chow designs these to be worn and used at events rather than photographed once. That is a different brief to fancy dress and it is where the cost sits. One cloak covering four looks is the value, alongside a hem that comes through a full weekend outdoors.

It is worth being straight about what it does not do. The wool blend cuts wind and resists light rain, and it is not waterproof, so a heavy downpour still calls for a shell over the top.

Who this cloak is for

  • A LARP player who wants one garment covering warmth, weapon access and a finished look without packing three.
  • A cosplayer building a warrior, viking or mage look who needs an earth-toned cloak that photographs well and survives a full convention.
  • A ren faire regular after a hooded cloak that reads period without spending a full kit budget.
  • Anyone replacing a cheaper cloak that gave up after one event.
  • Anyone buying for a partner who plays, where one size takes the sizing guesswork out of it.

Common questions

Is this one garment or a cloak and a separate robe?
One garment. It is a single convertible cloak that buttons down both sides, so it can be worn as a crossover cloak, a cape, or rebuttoned at the shoulders to sit as a robe. There is no separate robe, the robe is one of the four ways to wear the cloak.
How do the four styling options work?
The cloak buttons down both sides. Closed, the panels cross over double-breasted against the wind. Fold back one side for weapon access, both sides to wear it as a cape, or rebutton at the shoulders to sit it as a robe. It all comes from the one garment.
Will it fit over armour, and how long is it?
It is one size, cut full and long at 49in from the shoulder, so it sits over armour, a tunic or a robe with room to move. Send your measurements if you want to check the fit before buying.
What makes it worth more than a cheaper cloak?
The build. The side and shoulder buttons let one garment cover four looks rather than hanging one way, and the wool blend has the weight to drape properly at 49in instead of hanging flat. Chow has designed it to be worn and used at events rather than photographed once. It cuts wind and resists light rain, and it is not waterproof.

One rust wool hooded cloak. This is a single convertible garment, not a set. The robe is one of the four ways to wear it, not a second piece.

Any tunic, belt, sash or trousers shown in the photographs are styling only and are sold separately.

All Chows Emporium products are one size. This cloak is cut full and long to layer over armour, a tunic or a robe without bunching at the shoulders.

Length is 49in from the shoulder. Unisex fit.

If you have a question about measurements, send yours over before you order and we will tell you how it will sit.

Wool blend.

Dry clean recommended, or machine wash cold. Dry flat and away from direct heat. Do not tumble dry.

The weight of the wool blend is what gives the cloak its drape at full length. It cuts wind and resists light rain. It is not waterproof, so heavy rain still calls for a shell over the top.
